Car dealership owner who paid for flight for sick police officer honored

Eugene Knies, a McKinney resident who donated the $7,500 to pay for the air ambulance to bring Officer Alex Garcia home, received the Honorary 2008 Great First Responder Award on behalf of CareFlite and the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council.

He was named honorary first responder for his having gone "above and beyond the call of duty in providing the funds necessary to bring Dallas Police Officer Alex Garcia home from Denver and for putting service to others above self and making our communities better places to live," according to a release from CareFlite.

Garcia, 22, had been at Swedish Medical Center in Denver since July 8, when he became severely dehydrated at a Police Explorers conference and ended up in the intensive care unit with blood clots. He underwent three surgical procedures to remove the clots.

Knies paid for Monday's flight after the city's insurance carrier, United Healthcare, declined to cover the cost. They said his benefit plan didn't cover the flight.

Sales lead to close shave

The managers at Bonham Chrysler recently put their hair on the line as an incentive to boost sales at the dealership. The five men told the sales staff that if they made 500 sales in one month they would shave their heads. When Chrysler confirmed the dealership met its goal in August, heads were shaved Sept. 4. Bonham salesman starts young

BONHAM - Jade Lamance is only 23 but with a little help from his friends, he will sell 300 vehicles this year at Bonham Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep.

"He's phenomenal," said dealership president, Eugene Knies, who also is part owner of three other automobile dealerships in Sherman and Greenville. "We love his ambition and his hard work."

Mr. Lamance, of course, has his own way of selling.

"I listen to my customers, then I show 'em what we've got," he said. "Then, we make 'em smile as they drive out of the dealership."

The young salesman grew up in Bonham and by the time he finished high school, he had landed his first job at Bonham Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep.

Bonham Chrysler salesman Jade Lamance started as a part-time salesman when he was just out of high school. He is on pace to sell about 300 vehicles this year.

In those days, Mr. Lamance would come to the dealership in the early hours on Saturdays, unlock all of the pre-owned cars, then take a shower and change clothes and spend the afternoon working in sales. He made more money selling half a day on Saturdays than he made in a month with his full-time porter's job.

"It was more or less a natural move for me," said Mr. Lamance. "I tried to learn everything I could from Mr. Knies and the other salesmen. It wasn't long until I began to build my own customer list."

His top qualities, said Mr. Knies, are his willingness to work hard, to fulfill his customer's needs and to be a team player. "Our business is very good," said Mr. Knies. "It boils down to having good products, good people and great service."

Bonham Chrysler builds on good will

Bonham Chrysler recently topped the 500 sales a month plateau and doesn't plan to stop there.

Bonham is a quiet community about 80 miles northeast of downtown Dallas. The biggest event of the week is often the Bonham High School Purple Warrior's Friday night football game.

Bonham Chrysler has become a fixture in the community in only nine years. Ask just about anybody for directions to the dealership and they can probably give them to you.

The dealership sits on just under 20 acres at 1522 W. Sam Rayburn, near the junction of State Highways 82 and 121. A recent expansion added needed office space for the dealership's accounting department and parts storage.

It's not just the locals who are in on the deals, however.

"We had a customer come in who had heard about us at a truck stop," said general sales manager Shawn Davis. "A lot of our business is from referrals and repeat customers. We treat people well and advertise good prices."

The dealership may be in a small town, but it hasn't stopped Bonham Chrysler from becoming the 19th largest full-line dealer in the country.

Bonham Chrysler sells all Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products. According to Mr. Daniels, Dodge trucks form the bulk of the store's business.

Bonham Chrysler, owned by Eugene Knies and Mark Daniels, prides itself on high-quality employees who know how to take care of the customer.

The dealership's small office space is crowded with desks and tables where the friendly sales staff can meet with customers.

"If we would not invite you over for supper, we don't want you working for us," Mr. Daniels said. "Our biggest achievement as a dealership is keeping our focus on the customers and our employees. A lot of dealerships lose sight of what brought them success."

Bonham Chrysler has 10 service bays and a strong staff of technicians.

"Many of our customers drive past other dealers to get their vehicles serviced here," Mr. Daniels said. "Many ask for their technician by name."
